How Sales Tax is Calculated

Any time an item is purchased, a small amount is owed in taxes. It's known as the sales tax, and it's paid at the time of purchase. It's a small percentage of the sale price that can be levied at the state, county and city level.

All areas have the same rate set by the state. The state rate establishes the minimum sales tax that will be owed. County and city officials can decide to add on local taxes, which are usually a fraction of the state rate. That means the combined state, county and city rate can be different from one zip code to the next.

Beware of coin dealers that don't impose the sales tax if their state requires it. When that's the case, it's the responsibility of the purchaser to pay use tax to their state. Sales and use tax are interconnected to ensure taxes are collected on all purchases.

There are a handful of states, including Oregon, New Hampshire and Delaware, that don't currently have a state sales tax. However, be aware that taxes can still apply at the county and city level. Always proceed with caution and fully understand the tax implications in the state where you reside and where items are being purchased.

Sales Tax Rate For In-Store Purchases in Texas

Sales Tax Rate For Purchases Made Through Online Platforms

At one point, online purchases weren't subject to sales tax, but that has changed. For online purchases made through eBay and similar platforms, sales tax will be added at the time of purchase, depending on your state’s internet sales tax laws.

The sales tax rate is typically based on your address. Wherever the coin is being shipped, the destination will determine the sales tax. There are a few states that have a slightly different approach when the seller and buyer are both in-state, and Texas is one of them. Here in Texas if you make an online purchase that is shipped somewhere in the state, the seller's location is used to calculate the sales tax.

Whether the shipping and handling costs are included in the total being taxed depends on the state.
